Artist Statement
As a busy mother I find my work as an artist to be cathartic, for me creating artwork is about escape from the mundane routines of every day life because when I am in my studio I think only of my work. I would call myself a Fine artist because I feel the media I use can differ from one project to another and I prefer not to be restricted to one type of practice. I would like my work to cause people to stop and to reflect, I would like my viewers to question my work as I often, and I find the viewer’s portrayal of my work interesting than the work itself. I tend to work with inorganic material yet try to portray an organic presence. I am inspired mainly by humans’ ways of thinking and by their physical form. I feel, no matter what size or shape the human body is, it creates beautiful lines whether they are feminine or masculine. My work is sensuous and provocative, and reflects myself within occurrences in my life at the time of creating it. Even though my work is mainly about myself I still want the viewer to have their own perspective and their own experience and that is why use ambiguity in my work. I enjoying using contrast with my materials and my concepts and tend to find it within other peoples work. I enjoy creating an environment that has a sense of uneasiness grounded in familiarity.
I have been inspired by many artist’s but the two main Artists who come to mind would be Christian Boltanski and Brice Marden. The work of Boltanski inspires me where he started creating 3D art based on himself and his childhood. He has progressed into one of the leading artist’s in France, who faces the immortality in our world and offers the viewers a need to investigate his work to understand its origins. This in-turn educated them about the fragility of human existence. Brice Marden’s work gives me a sense of freedom. His linear paintings are beautiful and mesmerising. I admire his use of tones and how his paintings appear to have a formal sculptural look about them. I also find myself drawing loosely like him, in an attempt to clear my mind and to regain my focus in a very autonomous way. I would like to learn more about these artists and what had inspired them with their work.
In the future I hope to focus more on my interest in the human mind represented through form. Also I want to work more with repetitive patterns and the concepts of deconstruction and deteritation and explore and expand my use of materials.
