Summer Research

For my Research Project i started with I went back to the first discipline, which had started my fascination with becoming an artist, black and white photography. I started taking photos of random objects I could find within my house that had some sort of personal attachment to.

One object was a bracelet I brought while my closes friends and I was at Notting Hill Carnival, because this was a rare occasion where we could get together, this item means a lot to me. (below Photos 1 + 2)

I manipulated the bracelet to change its appearance and to create different forms. The photos from both of these objects inspired me to paint linear contrasting monographic paintings below (painting 1 & 2)

I also took photos of caved wooden figure I was given. They have a hopeful angelic look about them that contrast against the dusty wings and emptiness of the space around them. (photo 3 & 4)

Again these photos i later found inspired my linea and contrasting paintings below. (painting 3 & 4)

The third object I photographed was of a piece of dried up, dead coral which my mother had given me to use as a painting tool. ( photos 5 & 6) I found it to beautiful to cover it with paint and stored it waiting for another use. I found it interesting how this piece of coral which had once been soft, bright coloured moving living thing had become a hard, dull coloured hollow skeleton, yet after death it still have this beautiful delicate detail to it. After these photos I started painting, drawing and sculpting from them. While using wire I created different sized cylinders and wrapped them in wool to show the contrast between hard and soft, organic and inorganic. Before I knew it I had created what appeared to by living sculptures with their own little characters. ( image 1)
