Progression

A lot has changes and happened with in the last 2 months. i feel as if a window which was once dark and sealed has now been cleaned and opened. After my last few project i have learned to have more faith in my instincts and to trust my own judgement. i Feel this paid off n my end of year show as i got positive feed back. I will talk more about that later.

Carrying on from where i last posted my work progressed in a very contrasting way. My practical work during this time has consisted between installation and sculpture, where I was Inspired by several artists, for example: The work of Orly Genger, John Grade and Brice Marden all appeal to me in there use of pattern and creating shapely forms, Marden’s work gives me this sense of freedom as when I mimic his lines gives my mind clearance. Cornelia Parker and her work of “cold dark matter” and “edge of England” inspired me with her use of lighting and composition as well as its self-literary context. The work of Christian Bottanski and Susan Hiller had influenced me in a more contextual way that I found fascinating in their theory behind their work. They both question the loss of memory and the disappearance of cultures and individuality in today’s society. This led me to think more about my own existence in it all.

During this time i did a lot of reading and researched deeper into the materials i have been using. looking into the materials as individual entities and explored how I could draw with them literally. I left two pieces of metal in water, one copper and one steel as I learned that the two metals are at the different end of the Galvanic Scale which when exposed to water they create a chemical reaction which results in rust. Once the water had evaporated I then sprayed the rusted steel with water and pressed it against a piece of watercolor paper, which resulted in some beautifully patterned images. (image 1 & 2)

I also found myself digging deeper into the process of deterioration and the cause behind it and the origins of steel and how it is created. This lead me down a path of physics and of the Universe. I discovered through my research that every thing is made of atoms and elements (i.e. steel) and these in turn are made from the death of a dying star with in our universe. this process is called Nuclear Fusion and is when the energy from a star is about to be completely used up which causes the star to collapse in on its self and this in turn produces heat and elements. I also learned that the colour of a star can determin its age and heat. A star near its death glows a beautiful red rusty colour  and burns cooler than a New born star which shines with a bright blue light. (image 4)
