Today i received my brief to which i will have to follow for the next three weeks, titled utopia/Dystopia which is about how these ideals has been inspired and destroyed our culture for centuries and how this has informed and been expressed by many forms of art ranging from literature, films to paintings, installations and many many more.
I have a basic understanding of 'what is utopia?' The word 'Utopia' was created by a man called Thomas More as a tittle for his book. http://www.online-literature.com/more/utopia/.
The word it self is from the Greek ou-topos meaning 'no place' or 'nowhere' but it also has a double meaning as in Greek the word eu-topos, which is the same, means a 'good place'. http://www.bl.uk/learning/histcitizen/21cc/utopia/utopia.html.
It appears that Thomas More used this word on purpose as the content of the book is a concept of a world which has different social classes that work together to produce a perfect world with no problems or no deadly health issues. where every man and woman got on, which is a "good place" in fiction but to obtain this is reality it is an unattainable place or "nowhere".
So during this project my aim is to research and develop my awareness about the complexity of Utopia/Dystopia and to research how other artist have expressed there own interpretation of the concepts, be they social, religious, economical or personal ideals. i Also plan to create my own piece, or pieces, of work during my exploration on the subject.
